In the world of aircraft ownership, the FAA provides distinct pathways for creating owner-made parts, depending on whether the aircraft is experimental or FAA-certified. For experimental aircraft, owners enjoy significant flexibility: they can produce and install their own parts without the formal documentation required for certified planes. While an airworthiness inspection is recommended for safety, it’s not strictly required. On the other hand, for FAA-certified aircraft, owners can also create their own parts under regulation FAR 21.9(a)(5), as long as they’re involved in the design or production and the installing mechanic ensures the part meets airworthiness standards. In both cases, the FAA supports owner innovation while maintaining safety guidelines.
